canoeing biking tanks planes and automobilesWell we had a fabulous time canoeing down the Assabet. The trees were in their fall bloom. We saw swan, heron, mallard, hawk and the black vultures too. Camping on Crow island the older scouts set their tents on the western bank and sat watching the orange and red clouds shining off the river. The younger scouts set up hammocks and tents amoung the trees of the woods along the shore. The stars were bright and the dipper was low in the northern sky. Owls traded calls at night while all slept warmly in their bags after a hardy meal. Morning came with billowing clouds coming out of the pond on the island and the river fog moved as gently as the current. The older scouts biked to the Collings Foundation early after breakfast to help with crowd control at the museums. After looking over the vintage antique and race cars we were in awe of the contraptions that let us live Icarus' dream. We spoke with gentlemen and ladies from the greatest generation and those that dressed like they had in the forties. The sun was bright on the reenactment of that French town in conflict 60 years ago. We sat on the lawn and marveled at the equestrian talent stepping on the strip of grass that runs like a ribbon beside the Assabet River. Warm chili in our bellies brought a smile to our faces as we mounted our caravan for home. |
